Driving to Cyangugu(Kamembe)

The road from Kigali passes through Nyanza( Nyabisindu), Butare, Gikongoro and finally Nyungwe Forest. The Distance Kigali -Cyangugu is approximately 295 Km and it can take 5-6 Hrs.  The road is completely sealed (tarmac).  The main attractions along the route are the King's Palace at Nyanza, the Ethnographic Museum at Butare and the Genocide Memorial of Murambi.

Flying to Cyangugu/Kamembe Airport

Rwandair Air Express operates direct flights from Kigali on Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays.  The flight departs Kigali(Kanombe)  International Airport.  The flight details are as follows

Touirst Attractions in Cyangugu/Kamembe

While in Cyangugu there are a number of places one can visit.  These includes

• Nyungwe Forest National Park: Nyungwe forests is the largest mountain rain forest in East and Central Africa. It boasts of 13 species of primates including chimpanzees.

• Cyamudongo Forest Chimpanzee Reserve:  Cyamudongo forest reserve covers and area of 6 Km2.   The forest  habours a population of Chimpanzees and L'Hoerst's  monkeys.  It is also listed as an  IBA (Important Bird Area) by BirdLife International.  Cyamudongo can be accessed by private transport from Cyangugu.

• Bugarama Hot Springs:  Bugarama Hotsprings are approximately 60 Kms from Cyangugu next to the Ciment Factory.  The best way of reaching them is by use of private means.

• Bukavu in the DR Congo:  You can always cross the border to Bukavu in the DR Congo.  Currently the situation is cool. Bukavu is also the location of Kahuzi-Biega National Park. Kahuzi-Biega National Park s one of the last refuges of the rare Mountain Gorilla and was the original site where Dian Fossey studied gorillas before relocating to Rwanda.  Kahuzi Biega National Park is  named after two extinct volcanoes, Mount Kahuzi (3,308 m) and Mount Biéga (2,790 m). Mount Kahuzi is the highest in Kivu Province of DR Congo.  It is located 50Km west of Bukavu.
